Week 11

We are half way through the year - unbelievable.  I am really proud of the progress made by all of my workmates in Room 10.  They are a hard working, talented and beautiful bunch - I'm really quite lucky to be able to spend each day in such good company.  But, this amazing team of Year 2s is backed by an equally amazing team of parents, caregiver, grandparents...  Thank you so much for your support.

This is a very busy week - it's a sprint to the finish.

Mon: Hangi Preparation
Tue: Move it
Hangi Lunch (don't forget your plate, bowl and cutlery)
Wed: Firewise Programme
          Visiting Orchestra
          Move It
Thurs:
Fri: Bishop Steven visits

Reading Logs
Reading Logs go out this week.  Please, please, keep up the reading over the holidays.  In the last holiday break Room 10 had a holiday reading log return rate of 80% (9 boys and 11 girls = 20/26).  We can do better than that.  I want 100% of our reading logs filled in and returned after the holidays. I will be taking photos of the children holding their returned reading logs so that I can make a Reading Wall of Fame display at the beginning of next term (extra incentive to get them in).

You can list books you have read to your child, books they have read alone, recipes, instructions, maps... If your child participated in reading it then it has a place on the reading log.  Our public library is fantastic and has great holiday programmes for our kids.  And, don't forget about the huge library of books on Reading Eggs.

Holiday Reading Competition - Room 10 extra
Snap photos of your kids reading in strange places/positions and email these to me so I can put them on the blog (I will check regularly - but not daily).  The best photo will win a prize.  Here are some ideas:

Reading
This week I have been looking into research about 'the holiday reading slide'.  This has been in the news lately and is a real concern.  The holiday reading logs will be coming home soon - please, please, please keep your child reading over the school holiday.  I know it can be tricky (I have a kid with a reading log too) so I will be adding a small challenge or two to make it even more interesting AND will give you some ideas about encouraging reading at home.

Week 10

I am posting from my iPhone tonight - I have no internet at home!!!! I can't even check the calendar or Daves weekly notice for staff. From memory we have:
 Mon:
Tue: move it
Wed: move it
Thurs: junior cross country
Fri: golden time - bring a toy

I'll do a proper job when I get to school and I'll put the notices on the board so you can see them at drop off time. How on earth did we all survive before Internet?

Pencil Tins

The kids are bringing home their pencil tins today.  I had quite a few pencils left over from a big order I got last year so they are also bringing home a set of pencils to use for 'home learning'.

Number Rumble

Check it out - we are number 9 in the 10 Monkeys Hall of Fame!!!
We are on a mission to get to number one now
(We can't let St Joseph's beat us).
Look out all you other monkeys - Room 10 is on a maths roll.

Assembly

I am having internet issues at home - will make an assembly post as soon as I can.  Watch this space.

Thomas

Thomas is in Thailand at the moment.  He sent us an email and a photo to show us what he has been up to.  Wow!  Thomas and Brendon look like they are having a great time - lucky boys!!!!!

Hi, we are having lots of fun in Thailand and the weather is very hot everywhere we go. So far we have looked at some temples, patted a leopard and visited a snake farm. This was very scary as the snakes were very big and very fast.  Today we visited an elephant park and rode on an elephant, an ox pulling a cart and rafted down a long river.  Every night we go into town and look at the markets where thee are lots of clothes and ornaments for sale.  We have also been swimming in the pool which is lots of fun.  I will bring back lots of photos of our trip.

Missing you all,

Thomas

Week 8

It's another good week!!!!
Mon:
Tue:
Wed:
Thu:
Fri: Sacred Heart Mass 9am.  All welcome.

Golden Time
This week we are attempting to make reading buddy cushions out of old t-shirts.  I'll buy the stuffing - can you please dig out an old t-shirt that no longer fits.  We will be cutting it and drawing on it and stuffing it so don't send something you'd like to wear again.  Small t-shirts are best as we will be able to finish in the time available (and I can't afford to stuff 26 XXXL men's t-shirts).  The best thing is there is no sewing required - so you don't need to worry about your Sleeping Beauty.

Matariki
Matariki officially begins on the 18th of June. There are lots of ways you can celebrate Matariki with your family, and in doing so, start your own family traditions. Some ideas to get you started include:
A Family Feast
Make Matariki a time when the whole family gets together to feast and give thanks. It may be a nice opportunity to explore traditional Maori food like hangi and rewena (Maori bread).
A New Harvest
Use Matariki as a time to clear the winter vegetables, and prepare your vegetable garden for the new planting. It could become a family tradition to do the gardening altogether – at least for one day of the year.

Tree Planting
Contact your local Department of Conservation to find out if there are any regeneration projects happening in your area. Organise to plant a tree on Matariki, or better still, get together with a group of friends and plant several.
Sleep Under the Stars
Spend a night sleeping under the stars (or under a tent!), and tell your own family stories. You may want to talk about family memories, or create goals for the coming lunar year.

New Years Resolutions
Most of us create New Years Resolutions in January, but by the time June rolls around they are long forgotten. Why not use Matariki as a time to renew your resolutions.

Attend a Matariki Event
Matariki events are held right throughout the country, and new comers are usually welcomed as people are eager to share their culture. To find out what Matariki events are happening in your area, contact your local Marae or Maori Trust.

Sacred Heart
There is a ton of really technical, wordy, confusing information out there but... what it boils down to is this: The Feast of the Sacred Heart is a celebration of the love that Jesus has for us AND a reminder that we should try to show love, like Jesus.  It's all about love and gratitude.

Assembly

OOOPS!  I just realised I forgot to tell everyone that we are running the assembly this week.  You are most welcome to join us.  Assembly starts at about 2:00 in the school hall.  I will take heaps of photos etc so no-one will miss out.

The theme for our assembly is Perseverance.  Here is one of our perseverance songs - we might be singing this so it would be good to have a sing-a-long at home.

Week 7

It's a bit late tonight, sorry.  I flew to Wellington for the weekend to spend some time with my big girl. Wellington was gorgeous - sunny, calm, blue skies...  And then we flew home.  Needless to say, I'm running a little behind schedule tonight.

Mon: Queen's Birthday
Tue:
Wed:
Thu:
Fri: Golden time and library

Isn't that a gorgeous looking week?

Reading
My research this week has been focussed on independent reading activities.  One of the messages that came through was that reading is not something we save for books.  Share some of this day to day reading with your kids.  Swap roles at the supermarket - they can read the list and push the trolley while you run around finding everything.  Ask them to check a road map to find best way to a friends house.  Ask for their help to read the recipe for dinner...
