Homework

A bit of confusion about homework - don't stress. There is supposed to be a cover page that explains everything BUT... we've had some printer issues. I pushed print and the pages did not magically appear at the other end.  It will be glued in ready for next week.

In the meantime...
All children are working at the bottom of the basic facts ladder (rote counting to and from 20).
They also have a spelling list noted (1, 2, or 3).

Some children were able to spell most words through to list 4 and or blitz all of the facts on basic facts ladder one, however, there were still some basic common errors that need to be sorted before I am happy to give harder work.  Building new learning on things that the children already know really well helps to strengthen new learning.  It will get harder - enjoy the down time.

Almost everyone brought their togs in week 2 - Thank You!  It will be great to have everyone in the pool again.

A huge thanks to all of the parents who have offered their help with typing stories, making dough and working in the classroom. Much appreciated.

Funny Friday News

On Friday morning we have Funny Friday News time.  Mrs T finds silly, crazy and funny news items on the internet. After we read/watch the news Mrs T gives us some work that makes us use our thinking skills (and our team work skills - a little harder to get right).

Reading

Yes - your child is probably bringing home easy books that have been seen before
Yes - we have done reading everyday but...
No - your child has not had a new book to take home everyday

The first weeks of the year are a whirlwind and involve a great deal of learning about class rules and routines.  This is a crucial step to having a happy and hard working class for the rest of the year so sometimes we ditch teaching groups to focus on these skills. When the independent activities run smoothly I am able to concentrate more fully on my focus teaching groups.

I am also in the process of testing the children on their maths skills, reading and writing. Most of this is 1:1 and so takes a little time.  I want the most up-to-date information so that I can tailor the learning to the needs of our kids.  I am hoping to be completely finished next week. I will discuss how my reading, writing and maths lessons run during tomorrow afternoons meet the teacher meeting.

Swimming
We will be swimming everyday this week.  Please bring your togs, towel and a plastic bag.  Swimming is a huge component of our PE for the term.  I need all children in the water unless there is a medical reason for not swimming - please provide a note/email.

Opening School Mass
This is a lovely mass and a wonderful way to start the year.  You are all welcome to join us.

Meet the Teacher
This is a great opportunity for you to learn a bit about how I run my class.  I'll zip through our week of learning, discuss expectations, give you some ideas about how you can help at home and answer any questions you might have.  This is a 25 minute overview of learning in room 10. Interviews are scheduled for term 2. If you want to specifically discuss your child and their learning please see me for an appointment.

Milk in Schools
Milk in schools begins this week.  It is a fantastic initiative.  Permission slips from last year will carry over into this year.  If circumstances have changed and you wish to amend your form just let me know and I'll print out a new form.

Summer Sports
Permission slips went home last week.  There is a really tight turn around for these - most sports start this week.  We are working on a 'first in' basis so if you have not returned your forms, and want to enrol, please be quick.

Reading Logs
Reading Logs are due by the end of this week.  A big thank you to the children who have already handed them in.  If you ran out of room (or lost the form) any piece of paper will do the trick.  Just make sure it has name, room number, books read and parent signatures.

Gala Day
Our school gala is to be held on 5th March.  Notices will be going out soon to begin the collection of resources, prizes, food etc.

Meet the Teacher

At 3:05, on Thursday next week we will have a meet the teacher evening. This is an open meeting to give you the chance to learn how Room 10 operates. I will talk about my reading, writing and maths teaching and will explain how you can help your child with their learning. I'll outline my expectations for behaviour, independence etc and show you how our behaviour programme works.  There will also be plenty of time for general chat and questions.

If you would like to speak to me about your child, specifically, please email me to make an appointment or rock up and and see me after school. Just give me a few weeks to get to know the kids and get some testing done.  1-1 interviews are scheduled for early in Term 2.

Our Learning This Term

Writing
We are learning how to write recounts.  Recounts are stories that talk about something that has already happened. We need to make sure we use enough detail that our readers can imagine what it was like to be there.  Here is a video that explains how to write a recount.

Mathematics
We are learning about statistics. We will collect data, sort it, graph it and discuss it.  We'll share some of our findings later on.

Religious Education
We are learning about our school's Catholic Character. It is also a busy term for liturgical year. We will look at the celebrations of Assumption, Palm Sunday, Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Stations of the Cross...  I'll post plenty of easy to understand information that you can discuss with your children.

Concept Curriculum
Our concept this term is 'Community - Interaction for a common purpose'. We are going to look at the ways different teams work together. What makes some teams work better than others?

We will keep you updated and share some of our amazing learning on the blog. You are most welcome to leave comments on the blog (but be positive, please). I love my camera so there will be plenty of photos of our little monsters hard at work.
